Alex Ovechkin Now NHL's All-Time Leader In Shots On Goal

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is now the NHL's all-time leader in shots on goal.

Ovechkin's shot with 11 minutes, 14 seconds remaining in the third period at the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night gave him 6,210 shots on goal in his career in 1,309 games. That topped the total of Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque, who had 6,209 in his 1,612-game NHL career.

Ovechkin increased his career total to 6,211 by game's end, with the Capitals winning 3-2 in overtime.

Ovechkin and his family have been working on the multilayered marketing and business platform along with the Capitals, the NHL, the NHL Players' Association and sponsors and licensees -- who all will be part of Ovechkin's remaining journey as he stares down Gretzky's record and other milestones along the way.

Hat Trick Gives Alex Ovechkin 800 Goals

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored the 800th goal of his career Tuesday night, becoming the third player in NHL history -- behind Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe -- to reach the milestone.

He also became the first to do it with a single franchise, and it came as part of a hat trick performance in a 7-3 victory over the Blackhawks in Chicago.

"This ... it's huge. It's huge for hockey, it's huge for the organization," a drained Ovechkin told his teammates in the locker room after the win. "And to do it with you guys, it's special."

Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson tied a franchise record with five goals against the host Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.

Thompson tied the mark at 16:07 of the second period, which put the Sabres up 7-2 on their way to a 9-4 win. It was his 21st goal of the season. He became the second Buffalo player with five goals in a game, joining Dave Andreychuk, who accomplished the feat against the Boston Bruins on Feb. 6, 1986.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner set a franchise record in extending his point streak to 19 games Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The winger scored a short-handed goal early in the second period against the Lightning to reach his milestone and give Toronto a 1-0 lead. He later scored a power-play goal in the third period of the Maple Leafs' 4-3 overtime loss.

Steven Stamkos Joins 1,000th Career Point Club

Steven Stamkos had an assist for his 1,000th career point, Nick Paul scored twice and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Thursday night.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft, Stamkos assisted on Paul's second goal 7:55 into the second period that made it 2-0. Stamkos started the play with a pass behind the net to Ian Cole, who sent the puck in front to Paul.

"It's the most I celebrated a second assist in my career," he said. "I thought I'd make the safe play behind the net, and (Cole) made a great play."

Mitchel Marner Extends Career-Long Point Streak To 18 Games

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitchell Marner extended his career-long point streak to 18 games on Wednesday while tying a franchise record.

The winger scored an empty-net goal late in the third period of Toronto's 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks to continue his run. It's the longest active streak in the NHL this season and started in an overtime loss to the Sharks on Oct. 27.

Marner joined Darryl Sittler (in 1977-78) and Eddie Olczyk (1989-90) as the only Leafs to hit that 18-game mark.
